Actually, would anyone complain about sashimi slices being too thick? We might have at Manzoku, the sister restaurant to Chikuwa Tei – known to serve one of the best Chirashi Don in Singapore.
Manzoku which means ‘satisfaction’ in Japanese, serves classic favourites available at Chikuwa Tei, along with custom sushi rolls and yakitori. Fish is sourced across Japan, and sauces such as shoyu and teriyaki are made in-house.
Finding the wooden-door place can be tricky, though it is located at a restaurant-populated Purvis Street. When in doubt, look for its neighbour Chin Chin Chicken Rice, nearer Beach Road side.
Back to the Chirashi Don ($25), quite lauded on social media for serving generous portions of fresh sliced fish on sushi rice.
No doubt about it, the bowl was a visual spectacle with salmon, swordfish, tuna, amberjack, ikura and tamago neatly arranged, a steal at its price. We only wished the slices were not so thick, especially the tuna which threaded on being gamey, and tough to bite through.
Maybe we just caught them on a bad day. The Chirashi was served within a minute of ordering. Why would anyone complain on food being served fast? Not when the rest of the other dishes arrived much later than this. So while we were done with the don, we were still waiting for the other food to come.
The Tendon ($14), rice with tempura, was not too bad a choice. The winner coming from the light soy dressing drizzled over, the prawn in the ebi tempura was fresh, though could have been crisper.
While I personally think that there is a lack of quality price-friendly mid-end Japanese restaurants in Singapore, Manzoku nicely fills up a gap. It would just need to polish up some of its offerings, and streamline their multiple menus for easier reference.
