Shabu Shabu On-Yasai has 196 outlets in Japan, and opened its first two in Singapore at CHIJMES and OneKM, serving thinly sliced meats and vegetables.
On-Yasai means ‘warm vegetables’ in Japanese, and indeed my group of friends went over and ordered multiple rounds of greens and mushrooms. It was UNLIMITED.
The Japanese restaurant offers both ala carte and buffet options, and the latter can be the much better deal for your money’s worth.
They have recently categorised their buffet options: $29.90++ for Standard Buffet (includes pork belly, pork collar, chicken tsumire and thigh); $39.90++ for Value Buffet (with the addition of beef chuck and eye roll) and $54.90++ for Premium Buffet (wagyu brisket, kurogegyu beef shoulder).
There was a stated time limit of 1.5 hours, but the staff didn’t chase us out even though we overstayed as the restaurant was not crowded. Could be a different story at other times.
We liked that there was a variety of appetizing soup bases, with choice of two soups out of six: Seaweed, Sichuan Spicy, Soya Milk, Sukiyaki, Japanese style Spicy Soup and Truffle Flavoured Golden Soup.
The soya milk was our favourite, creamy and mildly-seasoned, which allowed us to appreciate the natural sweetness of the vegetables and flavours of the meat. Even the Sukiyaki we had, wasn’t too salty.
In short, it was desserts – no, meats – okay, soups – good, vegetables – very good.
The meats were kind of average, the standard fare with limited variety, and unexpectedly the vegetables, roots and mushrooms which excited us.
Spoilt for choices, with anything from lettuce iceberg, to choi sum, ku chye, white radish to Japanese leek. Order the vegetable platter when in doubt.
Service was zealous and prompt, with waiters frequently coming over to top-up your soup and asking if you require anything.
On that note, my dining kakis enjoyed the spacious feel, friendly service, and tasty soups for its price. And I was urged by my friends to quickly write about Shabu Shabu On-Yasai, because they deserve some more publicity.
