Ramen Matsuri – Oh, There Is Sakura Chicken Ramen At Boat Quay

Chicken ramen hasn’t been that much a craze in Singapore compared to its pork counterpart, with the exception of Marutama and Tori King by Keisuke, more famous for its mega drumstick than the broth. Possibly diners think the broth is on the oily side.

Being a total ramen lover (I think I tried almost every brand in Singapore), I couldn’t believe I allowed Ramen Matsuri to escape under my nose, and it is just a short walk away from Ramen Bar Suzuki popular with the CBD folks.

Chef Ikehata was previous from Marutama Ra-Men, and created a new Sakura Chicken Ramen (ie chicken is bred without antibiotics and growth hormones, contain less fat and cholesterol, and listen to Mozart).

The Sakura Chicken Ramen Rich Super ($16.90) is a hearty bowl containing 3 slices of chicken, 2 slices of pork char siew, 1 egg, 2 pieces of seaweed, black fungus and spring onions.

Upon first sip of the soup, I thought “Nice!”… milky yet not over powering rich and greasy such that is possible to finish to the last drop. There is a slight tinge of sweetness that may need some getting used to. (If you enjoy the super lush type of tonkotsu soups, this may not be for you.)

The chicken slices were tender and thin, and I thought it was a refreshing change from pork char siu (plus some ramen shop’s pork is quite dry and tough). The ajitama egg is flavoured well, though I preferred if the noodles had more bite and springiness.

If chicken broth is not your thing, there are also other ramen varieties, like the Tokyo Shoyu Ramen, Noukou Shoyu Ramen, Tanmen, Miso Ramen and Spicy Ramen, on top of a range of side dishes (try the gyoza). Ramen price range from $12 – $17.50, inclusive of GST and service charge.

For once, I thought that the chicken broth ramen is done better than the pork varieties in the same shop. Lunch time is generally packed while dinner is slightly quieter. Show them some love.
